Altra Lone Peak 9+ Sizing Guide: Does It Run Small or True to Size?

Short answer

The Altra Lone Peak 9+ is built on Altra's Original FootShape last, the widest and deepest toe box the brand makes. Length is close to true to size, but the men's version runs a touch long for a lot of testers, while the women's fits true.

Fit Notes

Altra Lone Peak 9
Same last, same length. The 9+ upper feels a little stiffer and less forgiving for the first few runs, and the Vibram outsole adds a slightly firmer feel underfoot. If you wear the Lone Peak 9 Wide, don't buy the 9+ in your usual size expecting the same volume, because the + version is regular width only.
Hoka Speedgoat 6
The Speedgoat is snug and tapered with a big rocker and a much taller stack. The Lone Peak 9+ gives your toes far more room and sits way closer to the ground. If you sized up in the Speedgoat just to stop toe rub, go back to your true length here; the FootShape box handles width without extra length.
Saucony Peregrine 14
Both are ground-close and grippy, but the Peregrine has a 4mm drop and a much narrower, more precise forefoot. Length matches well. Expect more room across the toes and less lockdown on fast, technical descents in the Lone Peak.
Brooks Cascadia 18
The Cascadia has a traditional 6mm drop and a medium-width toe box with a cushier, more protective ride. The Lone Peak 9+ is flatter, roomier, and firmer. Length lines up; if you wear a Cascadia Wide for toe room, the regular Lone Peak 9+ should feel just as spacious up front.
Altra Olympus 6
The Olympus 6 runs about a half size short, so many people buy it a half size up. If you did that, come back down to your true size in the Lone Peak 9+. The Lone Peak's toe box is also deeper and roomier than the Olympus's FootShape fit.

Sizing FAQ

Does the Altra Lone Peak 9+ run true to size?

Mostly, yes. Women's sizes fit true to length, and men's run slightly long for some testers, so if you're between sizes, men should take the smaller one. Because the toe box is so roomy, there's rarely a reason to size up for width.

Does the Lone Peak 9+ come in wide?

No. The Lone Peak 9+ is only made in regular width. The good news is that Altra's regular Original FootShape fit is already wider than most brands' wide options in the forefoot. If you need extra volume through the midfoot and heel too, the standard Lone Peak 9 is the one with a wide version.

Is the Lone Peak 9+ good for narrow feet?

Usually not. The midfoot and toe box are generous, and narrow feet tend to slide forward and sideways on downhills and sidehill trails. You can tighten it up with a runner's loop at the top eyelet, but narrow-footed runners are better served by something like the Saucony Peregrine 14.
